Early harvest of direct from field processing potatoes has begun in Manitoba, the Aug. 26 provincial potato report from Manitoba Agriculture’s Vikram Bisht said. Desiccation of crops has also started to stop aphids from moving into fields which are mature or being harvested.
The report noted there was widespread rain over the past week with totals ranging from 2.9 mm to 52.4 mm. Due to the rain crop water demand was generally lower but many fields still required supplemental irrigation.
Aphid monitoring over the week showed high numbers compared to previous weeks, the report said. Green peach aphids and potato aphids were trapped at many trap sites. Bisht noted it’s important to tank mix insecticide application along with mineral oils for aphid management.
