The potato harvest in south western Ontario is well underway, an Aug. 23 email update from Eugenia Banks said. The update noted field frying is keeping WD Potato extremely busy.
There have been a few reports of second growth, such as heat runners and sprouting. These are due to the hot, dry growing season, Banks said.
Top killing has begun in the Alliston area, the update said. There’s early blight being noticed in field that are going down, but late blight hasn’t been reported in conventional fields.
“Doing test digs is a recommended practice to detect problem areas in fields. Pink eye might be a potential problem, keep an eye on it,” Banks said.
The Melancthon region was a late planting area with many of the fields still green and just starting to show maturity. Banks noted drought wasn’t a problem there with fields looking healthy all season long.
