Canadian John Griffin Named New World Potato Congress President, CEO

John Griffin has been announced as the new president and CEO of the World Potato Congress (WPC), after Romain Cools announced he will be retiring, a July 1 news release said.

Cools served as president for the past four years, he has served in various roles with WPC for the past 16 years. Griffin has previously served as vice president of WPC and is from Elmsdale, P.E.I. He is the president of WP Griffin Inc., a family-owned grower, packer, and shipper of potatoes.

Peter VanderZaag will take over the role of vice president of WPC, the release said. VanderZaag is the president and a partner in Sunrise Potato with his daughter Ruth and son-in-law Nick. He also serves as visiting professor at the Yunnan Normal University in Kunming, China, and has worked in over 60 countries around the world with the International Potato Centre.

The release noted the 12th World Potato Congress will happen from June 23 to 26, 2024 in Adelaide, Australia.
