With the Canadian Spud Congress coming up on March 22 and 23, we’re highlighting the sessions happening at it on Spud Smart. In this story we’re taking a closer look at the “Crop Talk — Canadian Growers Discuss Nematode and Disease Management” session.

Nematodes and disease can reduce yield potential and marketability of potato crops. Experts from Prince Edward Island, Ontario and Manitoba will share their experiences on how they protect their crops and the importance of an integrated approach to nematode and disease management.

Moderator: Alex Martin, Spud Smart U.S. correspondent

Time: 9:10 a.m. CDT on March 23

Charles Emre Charles Emre is a fourth-generation farmer residing on the original family farm in Norfolk County, Ont. He grows fresh market potatoes, asparagus and small grains. Emre has a special interest in soil health and cover crops with an emphasis on bio-fumigation.

Darren White Darren White owns and operates White Potato Services with his wife Melinda. They offer custom application of potato storage products, and potato agronomy consulting through Delta Ag Services in Manitoba. They also operate a small grain farm, which they plan to operate for profit, but as lovers of agriculture, it’s mostly for therapy.

White attended the University of Minnesota Crookston and earned a bachelor of science in agronomy, and he’s a certified crop advisor. As a potato agronomist he focuses less on specific products and more on optimum timing and execution of crop protection, irrigation and field operations. White enjoys hunting, artisan meat processing and smoking, and most things mechanical.

Steve Watts Steve Watts spent most of his professional career working in various aspects of the potato industry including research and extension with the Prince Edward Island Department of Agriculture, farm manager and director of variety development with Eric C Robinson Inc., and technical sales representative with Engage Agro.

Most recently, Watts just completed his 10th year as owner/operator of Genesis Crop Systems Inc based in Hampton, P.E.I. Genesis provides Island potato growers with independent modern technical advice to improve their agronomic, economic and overall environmental position.

Genesis is also one of few independent research companies specializing in small and field scale research in Atlantic Canada. Genesis clients have included numerous crop input suppliers, government, academic and industry associations.
