Canadian Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Lawrence MacAulay met with the Prince Edward Island Potato Board to discuss the next steps in regard to the 2021 potato wart detections, a Sept. 8 news release said.
Following the completion of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s (CFIA) investigation related to the two 2021 detections of potato wart in P.E.I., MacAulay and the CFIA committed to engaging with the industry on next steps during the meeting, the release said.
The next steps include:
- Designating Pest Free Places of Production (PFPP) in P.E.I. to support the movement of commodities including seed potatoes off of the Island
- The CFIA will continue to engage with industry on program elements to renew the National Potato Wart Response Plan and work towards implementation in 2024
This was MacAulay’s first meeting with the P.E.I. Potato Board in his current role as the federal agriculture minister.
