Potato Development Varies Across Southern Ontario

-

Potato fields across Ontario are at a range of stages for development, a June 14 email update from Eugenia Banks said. Some in southwestern Ontario are at the row filling and flowering stage while others are just starting to emerge in the Melancthon area.

Banks noted rain fell last Monday and Tuesday night, which was a welcome sight for growers.

“Hopefully, herbicides have not been leached into the root zone,” Banks said.

In the update Banks noted the rain and cooler temperatures has her thinking about late blight. The Ontario Potato Board will support four spore traps this year, two near Melancthon and two near Alliston.

“These spore traps will provide information on the detection of spores but will not replace field scouting or a proactive fungicide program,” she said.
