It’s been a busy year at HZPC in Canada. From becoming royal (yes, the King of the Netherlands bestowed us with a new title crowning us as Royal HZPC Group) to putting up a for sale sign at our building on Prince Edward Island, we’re making big changes that are going to help you grow our spuds better. At 125 years old we’re not slowing down, if anything we’re ramping things up and growing our company.
HZPC is the world’s largest private potato breeder, and we’ve been in Canada since the late 1990s when Plant Breeders’ Rights came into effect. Since then, we’ve worked to bring the best and most innovative potato varieties that we have in Holland to your Canadian potato fields. To date we have acted as seed traders in Canada, but that’s about to change as we will soon unveil our new dealer network and move into the next phase of HZPC Canada.
We’ve moved away from seed trading which will enable us to focus on the things that we do really well and allow our seed producers and dealers to focus on the things they do really well — providing excellent seed to customers and growers across Canada. We’re now focused on anticipating market needs, both in the fresh and frozen processing sectors. We want to understand where our customers are going to be in the next 10 years, because that’s how long it takes us to breed a new variety.
These changes will put the choice back in the hands of the growers and the packer shippers. In the past it has been us deciding where you’re getting your seed from regardless of whether or not it fits your business. Now we’re enabling you to do it on your own. Our team is 100 per cent remote distributed across North America so that we’re closer to you, our customers.
While we won’t have a physical brick and mortar operation in Canada anymore (thus the selling of our P.E.I. building) it doesn’t mean you won’t be able to reach us. You can get in touch with us through your seed grower that you’ve always bought our amazing varieties from or at [email protected]. Or you can email myself, I’m always willing to chat and answer any questions you may have about HZPC potato varieties or about basically anything spud related.
