The Manitoba potato harvest for storage is in full swing with about a third of potatoes having been harvested, the Sept. 15 provincial potato report from Manitoba Agriculture’s Vikram Bisht said. Direct-from-field harvesting for processing is still ongoing for the fifth week.
“Some farms are yet to start while some are nearly 50 per cent done harvesting. Yield estimates are much better than the past few years,” Bisht said in the report.
The past week was slightly cooler for temperatures than previous weeks, with highs at 26 to 31 C and overnight lows of 2.4 to 6.2 C. The report noted all parts of the province received some amount of rainfall ranging from six to 23 mm in potato growing areas.
Potato early dying is showing in many more fields with greater incidence and severity with both Verticillium wilt and black dot disease, the report said.
