Manitoba Potato Harvest Nearing Finish Line

-

The Manitoba potato harvest is almost done with some farms expected to finish operations this week, the Oct. 6 provincial potato report from Manitoba Agriculture’s Vikram Bisht said.

Current estimates have harvested acres ranging from 60 to 100 per cent, however Bisht noted the overall average could be closer to 80 to 90 per cent done due to differing estimates. Most farms are expected to finish harvest by the end of the week.

There was practically no rainfall over the past week, and for crops still standing water demand is close to 20 mm. The report noted soil moisture in the top 30 cm is generally optimal, but there are areas which are dry to very dry.

Frost is forecast to hit this week on Thursday and Friday, but Bisht noted the week after is forecast to be good harvest weather.
