I love my job. I feel incredibly lucky to work in an industry filled with remarkable people who support and inspire each other. It’s been a true privilege to watch friends and colleagues grow their businesses, and in some cases be a small part of their success. I often wonder how I got so lucky. In this season of thankfulness, I’ve been reflecting on how I can show my gratitude in meaningful ways.
Of course, I can say “thank you” to mentors and organizations that helped me along the way, but it is even more fulfilling to give back directly to the industry and the communities that support it. This is why I participate on the Potatoes USA board, and ASTA Seed Potato sub-committee, helping advocate for our industry. I’m also active with the Potato Association of America, working to shape seed certification laws across the U.S. and Canada.
Efforts like regulatory advocacy and educational outreach help lift the whole industry. At HZPC we are guided by the belief that a rising tide lifts all boats. Through our Potato Glory education initiative, we are working to raise awareness and appreciation for potatoes. We want to see them featured on menus and no matter what breeder they come from, we want to see potatoes on shopping lists and menus to keep our industry thriving.
In my job, I travel a fair bit, and each stop on these trips is more than just a business opportunity; it’s a chance to connect with local communities that support our industry. I am grateful for these agricultural towns that are home to our customers.
Each quarter, our geographically spread-out team gathers in a new community, and we make it a priority to volunteer together. From helping food banks and community gardens to supporting the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program, we look for meaningful ways to give back wherever we go. This December we are joining a group of chefs to prepare meals for families facing food insecurity—a project I’m particularly excited about.
How do you show gratitude as an individual or as a company? There are so many ways to give back, whether it’s joining an industry advocacy group, volunteering in your local area, or sharing your expertise to help shape the future of your field. Not only will you build valuable connections, but you’ll help push your industry forward in a positive direction.
As we reflect on what we’re grateful for, let’s turn saying “thank you” into doing thank you. I’m always looking for ideas, and to improve myself. Please share how you show your appreciation through actions.
