P.E.I. Potato Industry Reminds Islanders of Road Safety During Harvest Season

-

As the 2024 potato harvest begins, the P.E.I. potato industry is calling on motorists across the Island to be extra cautious on the roads.

This season represents the culmination of farmers’ hard work and community spirit as they gather this valuable crop. However, it also brings an increase in agricultural traffic, including large, slow-moving equipment.

“We’re excited to kick off the final stage of the crop this year. As we approach this busy time, we ask Islanders to be particularly careful while driving,” said John Visser, chair of the PEI Potato Board. “Tractors, trucks, and heavy machinery will be moving between fields, storage facilities, and processing plants. Visibility for operators can be limited, so taking extra precautions can make a significant difference.”

To raise awareness, the PEI Potato Board and Cavendish Farms have teamed up to launch a safety campaign. This initiative includes radio and outdoor advertisements throughout Prince Edward Island, reminding drivers that harvest equipment is often slow-moving and carries heavy loads. Motorists should exercise patience, ensure safe passing conditions, and allow extra travel time, especially in rural areas where agricultural activity is concentrated.

“We appreciate all Islanders for their support throughout the growing season,” added Visser. “We wish all farmers, their families, and the many workers involved in the harvest a safe and successful season.”
