Potato growers in Prince Edward Island are reporting good growing conditions with rapid crop growth and not many issues, the July 7 P.E.I. Potato Agronomy Update said.
Lorraine MacKinnon held the first Crop Update Meeting of the season in Emerald, P.E.I. Thos in attendance noted their crops have been progressing well but there were a few issues popping up.
Growers in the O’Leary area have saw European corn borer egg masses, with some already spraying for the pest. There’s also been a few report of Colorado potato beetle adults, however it’s not a widespread occurrence, the update said.
There have been a few reports of serious emergence issues, mostly related to specific varieties or known seed issues. The update noted however there have been very few reports of blackleg and soft-rot issues.
There was a steady rain across the whole Island on Wednesday, July 6. The update said this should keep crops processing well. There has been a combination of mild daytime temperatures, cooler night temperatures, sunshine and adequate moisture making for rapid crop progression across the province.
