Ontario Potato Planting Off to Intermittent Start

-

Potato planting in southwestern Ontario has had an on and off start this year, an April 26 email update from Eugenia Banks said. Weather was unseasonably warm the week of April 10 with temperatures exceeding 20C, but then switched to single digit temperatures the week of April 17 with snow flurries happening.

“(This weather) reminded us that Mother Nature is in control, and that planting depends on her,” Banks said in her email.

On April 25 Banks was in the Alliston, Ont. area where she saw Garrett Vander Zaag with HJ Vander Zaag Farms planting potatoes. There has also been some fresh market potatoes planted in the Beeton, Ont. area by Alexiou Farms. There haven’t been any planters running in the Melancthon, Ont. area yet.

Banks noted in her email that she has talked to some growers who hope to start planting in a week or so.
