Manitoba Potato Planting Nearing Finish Line

-

Almost 95 per cent of Manitoba’s processing potato crop has been planted, the May 26 provincial potato report from Manitoba Agriculture’s Vikram Bisht said. Seed acres and areas with wet soils are 50 to 75 per cent done.

“Above normal temperatures (10C warmer than last year at the same time) and lack of rain this spring are the highlights weather-wise so far. There has been greater interest in ‘direct planting into stubble’ this year,” Bisht said in the report.

The report noted that potato planting started on April 27, which was a delay of about seven days over the normal start time. But Bisht noted that despite the delay, potato planting in Manitoba is expected to finish in the first week of June.

The first crop emergence was reported by around May 22 with more fields ready to emerge, the report said. It’s expected that by the first week of June 50 per cent of the fields will have emerged.
