New Brunswick potato producers who incurred high costs from last year’s excessive moisture will be eligible for financial aid starting in November.
The 2023 Canada-New Brunswick Potato AgriRecovery Initiative aims to cover the extra expenses farmers incurred while growing, harvesting, storing, or disposing of last year’s potato crop, according to a press release.
AgriRecovery is a disaster relief program designed to help farmers manage the financial burden of recovering from disasters. Funding for this initiative is shared between federal (60 per cent) and provincial (40 per cent) governments under the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership.
“The summer of 2023 was one of the wettest summers on recent record and the financial impact on New Brunswick potato growers was significant,” said Margaret Johnson, Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries Minister. “The new AgriRecovery initiative for potato growers will provide much-needed help. This is an important response to what the industry has asked for and a critical step in ensuring the sector is able to remain resilient.”
Up to $25 million will be available through Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and the Department of Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries under the AgriRecovery Framework.
