Syngenta Launches Orondis Gold Potato Fungicide

Syngenta Canada Inc. has launched Orondis® Gold Potato fungicide for suppression of pink rot and Pythium leak in potatoes. Pink rot is a devastating soil-borne disease that thrives in wet, poorly drained soils and can survive in soil for up to seven years. Just a few infected potatoes entering the storage bin can result in substantial losses, infecting healthy tubers and compromising marketable yield. That’s why proactive management of the disease is…

The government of the Netherlands and Dutch businesses have inked an agreement to undertake a “potato impact cluster” project in Bangladesh. The Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) and a consortium of Dutch businesses joined hands to share their experience and best practices with potato farmers in Bangladesh to improve supply chain in potato sector of Bangladesh. In-Furrow Pink Rot Fungicide Control Active in September?

Most of you probably know that Orondis Gold Potato fungicide, a co-pack containing Orondis and Ridomil (active ingredients oxathiapiprolin and metalaxyl-M), will be available this spring to suppress pink rot and Pythium leak.  The registration is for in-furrow application, but pink rot usually develops at the end of the season.  Will Orondis applied mid-May still be active in September? My colleagues across the border always do a good job evaluating fungicides before…

BASF Launches Critical Insecticide for Use in Canadian Soybeans and Potatoes

Canadian farmers have a new tool to protect their soybean and potato crops in 2019 with the launch of BASF’s Sefina™ insecticide. Sefina utilizes a unique mode of action, Group 9D active ingredient Inscalis™, to quickly halt aphid feeding, reducing production losses and virus transmission. In research and commercial trials across Canada and the United States, Sefina showed extended control of up to three weeks against additional aphid pests that have, over time, developed resistance to other insecticides. “Canadian…

Soil Tilling, Mulching Key To China’s Potato Crop

When you think of China, do you think of potatoes? Maybe not, but in the Loess Plateau region of northwestern China, potato is the main food crop. Even though it is such an important crop there, potato yields are lower than they could be. The area has a dry climate with uneven precipitation. Droughts are common, especially in the spring when crops are just starting to emerge. If soil moisture was more…

BASF Pipeline: New products for Potato Growers

Recently, I attended a meeting organized by the staff of BASF to provide updates on several pesticides in the pipeline. Two products that caught my attention were Zidua and CIMEGRA.  Zidua is a pre-emergence herbicide that controls redroot pigweed and suppresses lamb’s quarters.  It is in the same family as dimethenamid-p (Outlook) and s-metolachlor (Dual Magnum).Andrew Robinson, a potato agronomist in North Dakota and Minnesota, has been testing Zidua for three seasons. “Zidua needs to be…

The public, including manufacturers and stakeholders, are encouraged to submit comments during the 90-day public consultation period, beginning Oct. 5, 2018. Non-Renewal of Diquat (Reglone) Approval

According to the August 31 bulletin from the U.K.’s Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB), Reglone’s days are numbered, says Eugenia Banks, a potato specialist with the Ontario Potato Board. “Loss of the active ingredient Diquat will be a significant blow for European potato growers, as it is an effective desiccant, which helps achieve skin set—such a key requirement for successful storage—and cuts down the risk of disease spread immediately prior to harvest,”…
